What is CTR (Click-Through Rate)?

The percentage of people who click on your link after seeing it in search results or an ad.

Click-Through Rate (CTR) is a metric that measures the percentage of people who click on a specific link, ad, or search result compared to the total number of people who viewed it. In SEO, your organic CTR tells you how compelling your title tag and meta description are to searchers. In PPC, it measures how relevant your ad copy is to your target audience. Formula: CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100.

Why It Matters

CTR is a direct signal of relevance. A high CTR on your organic search listings tells Google that users find your page valuable for that query—which can actually improve your rankings. In paid search, a high CTR lowers your Cost Per Click through a better Quality Score. Industry benchmarks vary: a 3-5% organic CTR for page-one rankings is average, while anything above 10% for position 1-3 is excellent.
